Our guest really hasn't been running for that long but he has come a long way for sure.  A doctors visit, lifestyle change, and move across the country has totally changed his life.  Listen to get excited and inspired to run!

Thanks for listening.

Janet Patkowa ran the American River 50 for Season 2.  She has had a good year and a half to reflect on the experience of running her first ultra.  Much of her outlook and lifestyle has changed.  What would she do different?  What's next?

Hope you enjoy the show.

Wesley Trimble.  This dude had me wanting to go on and on forever.  His adventures are more epic than 99.9% of us, elite or otherwise.  If this account of a first ultra doesn't inspire you, we give up;)

Another great story of perseverance and running long distance!

From our guest:

"I'm an American expat now based in Scotland.  I completed my first ultra last week, a 50k along the Great Trossachs Path in Scotland's first national park.  I actually missed the race that I was due to compete in -- the Great Tartan Skidaddle -- because on race day, I was in hospital on a drip after being rushed in by ambulance because of a blood infection due to pneumonia (ait was approaching sepsis and apparently quite dangerous). I was gutted to miss the race. I recovered well and decided to run the race route as a solo affair with a friend from my trail running crew (the Carron Valley Trail Runners) and my wife.  I even spoke to the race director after I completed the route.  So I did complete my first ultra, just a week later than planned."

Enjoy the show.

5 Before 5 is a series of 5 shows to educate and inspire runners to take their nutrition more serious!  Be sure to tune in for Season 5 in the month!

On the show:

An increasing body of quality scientific evidence is linking artificial sweeteners with very damaging changes in gut bacteria. These sweeteners - aspartame, sucralose, maltodextrin, and acesulfame K - are all found in very high quantities in almost any sports nutrition product you care to pick up. From whey powder to energy gel, from hydration tablets to electrolyte blends.

Our gut is the most concentrated ecosystem on the planet containing 100,000 billion bacteria. Messing with these seriously derails health (they are responsible for our digestion and absorption of nutrients) and is linked to obesity, diabetes, chrohn’s, dementia and much more.

Gut bacteria are also the heart of our immune system, losing the good ones leaves us open to more illness. Bad on a good day, terrible when you’re training hard and knocking out the immune system anyway.

Messing with these bacteria also messes with our minds.

With the gut now understood as the second brain (it contains 200 million neurons, the same as a dog’s brain), and one which heavily influences our moods, emotions and feelings (the gut and brain share the same neurotransmitters, and are directly connected via the vagus nerve), disrupting gut bacteria can also produce negative mental side effects. As an example, 95% of our seratonin is produced in the gut.

Sports products containing these sweeteners (check the labels, they’re in over 90% of products on sale today) aren't just causing stomach upset and perfrmance hiccups on race day, they’re causing major longterm health damage.

5 Before 5 is a 5 part series addressing many nutritional subjects for runners!

On this show:

‘Eat less, move more’ doesn’t cut it, largely because all calories are not created equal and aerobic exercise isn’t great for shifting weight.

But, deploy a combination of fasting, juicing, or a plant-based diet from your weight loss arsenal and real results that stick are highly achievable as long as you know a few simple pitfalls to avoid and have the right motivation up your sleeve.

On the show!

  • Why nutrition schedules don’t work (seriously - when was the last time you ate anything other than sports nutrition on a fixed schedule, let alone a schedule that didn't account for any variation in weather, race conditions, individual variations)
  • Why you should drink to thirst
  • Why eating before you’re hungry is a load of old cobblers
  • Why your body knows best, and how to tune into its signals to deliver the perfect race day fueling strategy that works in any event, for anyone, at anytime

We have had a chance to catch up with the runners after this season but we wanted to get the coaches alone to hear what they thought about their clients, and the season as a whole.  We also tease some exciting news about season 5! Coming in September.

Rebecca trained for 6 months to have an experience only a small percentage of the world can say they have tasted.  It was an honor to follow her story.  Hear what she took away from it all!

We all justify why we can't or won't do something we really want.  Like making more money, winning losing weight, getting faster.  It doesn't matter.  When we tell the world we want something but tell ourselves something else, it's time for a little tough love.  We hope this helps you out of some of your default excuses!
