Life is crazy complicated sometimes and sometimes there isn't one thing you can do about it. Jules life is no exception. We dive in and see if we can pull out some chunks of time so she can manage it a bit better. Dealing with lawyers and serious life issues are in the way though, it's a good look for people dealing with stress and time management. We also talk a bit about her cold, rainy trail half a couple weeks ago and what to race in next. Enjoy this episode with Jules and her world class coach, Ian Sharman on the Becoming Ultra Show.
We are still following along Bailey and her journey to becoming an ultra runner but this week we wanted to take a side road to learn more about basic nutrition. We didn't even touch on race day and runner specific nutrition but the episode is full of recipe ideas and general principles for you and anyone else wanting to eat better on a daily basis. Enjoy the Becoming Ultra show!
Jules had some personal stuff come up today, and you know what, that's just fine. We will learn more about why she couldn't make it later but for now, we have a special episode! Ian Sharman will be coaching us through a trail half marathon. What to do the day before? Morning of? We go over the physical and the mental. Trail etiquette and race etiquette. We even go over post race nutrition a bit. For anyone that needs it laid out just a bit more detailed. This will be a good one to listen to. Plus, Jules is running one this weekend.
Bailey has been dealing with a literal pain in the butt. ITBS feels like a knife pushing into the outside of your knee so when the pain finally goes away, how do you train smart? That is the theme of today's show along with balancing work, life, and running to insure you are enjoying this pasttime of running. Michele also shares her experience last week in her own ultra competition!
Besides all of the hundreds of miles on trail, the nutrition, and strength training there is one thing that scares athletes of new sports. It's the gear. What do I need? What should I wear? Why is he or she wearing that? Do I really need to spend that much? Well, today Ian Sharman goes through most every gear you would need with his running student on the Becoming Ultra show.
Michele Yates and Bailey Black are on the Becoming Ultra show to share the journey. Michele, a world class ultra runner is coaching the ultra newbie and they have already run into a snag. This snag, ITBS, ends up being the main focus of the show. We talk injury prevention, treatment, and how tough it is mentally to deal with chronic injuries. You may be checking your shoes before this episode is over.
An ex-marine, single mom, and firefighter is the same person and she is training to become an ultra runner with the help of world class ultra runner Ian Sharman. Ian is finally getting to meet Jules in person(kind of) on the Google Hangout for this podcast. They talk about scheduling runs with a busy life, getting used to hills, when to power hike, and so much more that every new ultra runner goes through. It’s a fun first look at student and coach! We both give her tips on what to share with all of you so if you have anything in particular you would like to hear from Jules, let us know!
The second call was more about the nuts and bolts of the project. First, what are the philosophies of the coaches for the Becoming Ultra project? We go over base work, speed work, strength, cross training, recovery, and nutrition. They both have their own style and it is pretty cool to hear how they will be applying to their athlete. We talk about the logistics of the project which is still and probably will always be a work in progress. How often will we do Google Hangouts On Air? Podcasts? How much will the coaches share with the public? When will Matt be shooting the video of the runners? All fun stuff and all the details that need to be addressed. Lastly, we introduce the runners in two short video’s within the Google Hangout which y ou can find at Becoming Ultra.com. Their reactions were great and we think they will make for great follows!
We talk about the applications we recieved to be the subjects of the Becoming Ultra Project. The BU Project is a documentary style project following two runners being coached by two of the best inthe sport. Let us know what you think about the entries. Do you have a favorite? Are road runners a good fit? Is the ex-marine too hard core for this project? We have fun with the process and gear up for the runners we will be choosing soon.
