Recovery week!  Steven has one coming up and we dive in a bit more on the why and how of recovery as it pertains to the bigger picture of training for a first ultra!   Learn more at www.becomingultra.com.

Today's show was originally released on the Athlete On Fire show but sometimes the story just needs to be told.  We all know someone who has overcome big things in their own life or we need to be that person that does.  This is one of those stories.  Nothing more magical than someone who decides to truly change for the better. This person just happens to run ultras now!

Jul 16, 2016

Steven has been training for his first ultra for about 5 weeks now and he already has learned so much about himself.  On this show we talk about running in the rain and considerations to make it better, or to not run in it at all.  He is experiencing dead legs so we troubleshoot the possible causes and we start down a rabbit hole on what podcasts we listen to on runs!  Enjoy this one on the Becoming Ultra Show.

A new series called Summer Repeats to help train you on things when you aren't running.  Unique drills and training tips. A call for designers and design ideas for Becoming Ultra apparel. We feature a running related Instagram feed. The 33 Shake team updates us on the end of their cross country USA tour.  All this and updates for Season 3.  Enjoy the Becoming Ultra show.

Steven has been training for a couple weeks and we wanted to see how the formal training has affected his mindset.  We talk hydration, heat training, and best practices in these early summer months.  How and why would you make an ice bandana? Thanks for following along the Becoming Ultra show!

Becoming Ultra began a little over a year ago with the idea of videoing some runners training for their first ultra. Three seasons later a podcast, website, and countless videos have been created.  We have thousands of downloads per months and a great community is developing.  This is the show to start the planning to keep this around for a long time.  Not unlike running an ultra, we are in it for the long haul and hope you'll be a part of this.  Thanks for listening!

Jun 18, 2016

The Becoming Ultra is showcasing yet another runner training for a 50 miler with the coaching help of one of the best ultra runners out there, Liza Howard.  We talk about his best and worst experiences running to date, what he is excited about, as well how his relationship with his coach will work.  We hope you enjoy and learn something from the show!

This picking show is always pretty fun but inevitably we always wonder if we made the right choice after it's all said and done.  Will the runner respect the process?  Will they flake?  Will they give up at the first sign of adversity?  Did the other runners offer more?

After it's all said and done, there is no bad choice.  A bunch of runners who want to experience something EPIC have put themselves out there.  We are excited to help the runner we picked and hope that you all will get involved in this community of support and passion for BEcoming Ultra.

On this episode we share some needed changes to the very hectic Season 3 of the project.  We talk about mindset when you suffer big injuries and Warren Pole of 33 Shake comes on to talk about his cross country trip in the USA and the changes to labels by way of the FDA.  Thanks for listening.

A listener, Lisa, is on her feet at work for 50 hours a week, is a single mom with two teenagers, and is training for ultras.  We brainstorm a few training concepts she may be able to use in her training that will be good for anyone who is busy balancing work, life, and the important stuff, running. We also have to remind everyone that season 3 applications are being taken now for the Becoming Ultra Project!

May 17, 2016

The Becoming Ultra Project is about to begin season 3 and we share some of the details, including the launch date!  Also, Warren is on the road baking in the sun and finding amazing running communities and Nathan and Run Gum are getting ready for the Olympic season with an interesting event of their own. Enjoy the Becoming Ultra show!

May 7, 2016

It's been over 6 months since Liza and Krystal first met and start a journey that would lead to Krystal's first attempt at a 50 mile run.  This show is the reflection of the experience.  What she learned, what she would do differently, and more.  Enjoy the Becoming Ultra Season 2 finale!

May 6, 2016

Run Ragnar is a trail relay run and we are pretty pumped to have them on the show.  Their Race Director for the Snowmass, Colorado event comes on the show and shares what the experience will be like for the runners and what to expect.  Also, an update from the road with 33 Shake co-founder Warren Pole. We also share a story we have to share with you and more on the Becoming Ultra show!

Apr 29, 2016

We had three things to go over on this episode of the Becoming Ultra show.  The first had to do with what you are doing with our show. The second had to do with your first ultra ever. The third had to do with Krystal and Liza wrapping up the Season 2 podcast. Also, Warren Pole from the road in the USA on the road tour for 33 Shake.  Enjoy this episode of the Becoming Ultra show.

The last 6 months started with an ambitious goal to run a 50 miler. The longest run before Janet started on this journey was 13 miles.  With the help of ultra runner and coach Ian Sharman and plenty of support from a loyal audience, friends, and family, she was able to race in the American River 50 and tell us all about it on this show.  We hope you enjoyed her journey as much as we did.  This is the Becoming Ultra show! Learn more at www.becomingultra.com.

Apr 7, 2016

The American River 50 was all we could have asked for and more.  Gutty and emotional runs for for both Krystal and Janet.  Family, friends, and a nice warm day to run a beautiful course.  Lives were definitely changed. We are on the road for this show and you'll know what all Becoming Ultra is up to after this episode!

Apr 2, 2016

Janet Patkowa and Krystalore Stegner have been training for the American River 50 for 6 months and sharing their journey along the way.  Race day is finally here and some listeners have sent audio bits of love and luck.  This is for everyone but it is especially for Janet and Krystal!  Enjoy the Becoming Ultra show!

Mar 30, 2016

Finishing touches on packing for the American River 50 which includes audio, video, running gear, and a couple little people.  A quick update on one of the runners last minute injury that hopefully doesn't sideline them.  Also, how can you inspire these runners?  We know exactly how and it will only take a minute of your day. Thanks for listening to the Becoming Ultra show!

Mar 26, 2016

Krystal is only a week away from her first 50 miler after training for 6 months.  The last week is comprised of nerves and "what if's" but staying true to yourself is as important as any training.  Is a massage a smart thing before the race? If so, how soon?  What about nutrition?  What changes should be made and how should you approach your diet the last week?  All of this plus a Marathon in Buffalo that Team RWB is partnered with and one question on social media that Liza reads responses from is pretty interesting/inspiring.  Enjoy the Becoming Ultra show!

Mar 19, 2016

Janet, like many runners, has put the work in over the last 6 months and now it's all about waiting for race day.  A legitimate taper will have her volume down and her mind racing but with a few tips she should be able to manage the time just fine.  What other last minute details regarding race day can she be doing to prepare?  This and more on today's Becoming Ultra show!

Mar 17, 2016

We were going to call this the State Of the Becoming Ultra Union show because that is kind of what it is.  An update to what's coming and a thank you to everyone that has contributed along the way.  Some big announcements and some behind the scenes.  We hope you enjoy this episode of the Becoming Ultra Show.

Mar 11, 2016

Liza and Krystal come to talk about something that every runner struggles with.  Figuring out an answer when your friends, many of them not runners, want to know how long your race is going to take you.  Having the right goal before you go into the race is important as is being able to tell crew and family/friends about when to expect you.  We also go over Krystal's training for the last couple weeks.  Enjoy Becoming Ultra. Note: At 12 minute mark Liza squeeled.  We don't think her cat was harmed but we have no evidence either way.  It is, however, pretty funny.

Mar 4, 2016

Janet's training is going very well so are starting to focus on things to consider for her during the race.  Having a pacer can be a great addition to the experience but there are some things that many runners just don't know, or didn't think about.  That's what today's show is about.  Who is a good fit?  How do you set expectations?  When you you kindly tell them you are going to go it alone?  These questions and more with Ian Sharman and his runner Janet on the Becoming Ultra show!

Feb 29, 2016

Becoming and ultra runner can all be in the intent. Chris set out to do a 50 miler for his and if you listen to the race review, you can decide if he is "ultra" or not.  What sounds like an awe inspiring race with some unique twists, Chris share his experience, what he would do differently, and what is next for him.  Everyday runners can go do amazing things!  Enjoy the show.

Feb 27, 2016
